Zaabalawi as a Spiritual Journey

Several aspects of Zaabalawi make it seem more like a spiritual journey than a normal short story. If we look at the transgression in the people the narrator talks to than we can see a clear shift from the material world to the religious one. The narrator begins by talking to people who are heavily grounded in the material world. They either have or seek powers that only mater in the material world. These people have nothing that can help him. After he fails to gain insight from these men he moves onto more spiritual people. These people help a lot more than the ones before, but fail to complete the puzzle. It is only when the narrator gives up his connection to the world all together that he finds what he needs. I will begin by showing the symbolic meaning of Zaabalawi. Then I will show the connection that each person has to his or her world (material or spiritual)...
