Being Multi Lingual
As a young boy I was taught two languages at the same time, Arabic and English.
By the time I was 5,I was 100% fluent in both languages. At about age 8 I was put into speech therapy because I had developed an accent, I was speaking more Arabic then English and this was interfering with English at school. My father is Arabic and my mother is American. My father wanted to keep me fluent in Arabic so I could be in contact with my family and his business contacts. We spoke in it often, but this created a problem for me in school when I was 8 and again in high school several years later.
By the time I was in high school I had lost the accent, and had stopped using Arabic as a second language. I thought I had forgotten about it. On occasion I would hear family on the phone or hear my dad on the phone, but once we moved to the U.S...
