Paolo Veronese, along with Tintoretto and Titan, is considered to be one of the great and influential painters of the sixteenth century during the latter part of the Renaissance in Venice. His real name was Paolo Cagliari but because he was born in Verona in 1528 BCE, people began to recognize him as Veronese which means "born in Verona". In 1573, after being commissioned for the refectory of SS Giovanni e Paolo in Venice (cited in Encyclopedia of Italian Renaissance & Mannerist Art pg.1732), Veronese produced a massive, magnificent oil canvas that was 18' 3"x 42' and unveiled his masterpiece for the world to see. It was not surprising that he created such a large piece of artwork but what was amazing was the elegance and beauty of the painting. Veronese is known as a supreme colourist and for his illusionistic decorations in both fresco and oil (cited in Encyclopedia of Italian Renaissance & Mannerist Art pg.1727). With complete self-assurance, he made an imaginary world through his technique and methods and in this piece he evokes the lavishness and luxury of Venetian life. In it, the artwork displays Jesus with his disciples and tax collectors having an enormous feast that was intended for Jesus before his final entry into Jerusalem. In Luke Chapter 5, it reads, " Levi gave a great banquet for him (Jesus) in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at the table with him"...
