A New Beginning Life is a very precious gift. There are many opinions about the issue of when life truly begins. It is clear that the unborn child is alive from the moment of fertilization. “Prenatal life is conveniently divided into two phases: the embryonic and the fetal. During the embryonic period the vast majority of the named structures of the body appear, which happens during the first eight postovulatory weeks. The fetal period extends from eight weeks to birth”(O’Rahilly 17). The life of a baby begins long before the birthing process. Starting at birth and traveling back in time , tracing human life can begin at the beginning of his or her own individual fertilization. “The debate over when life begins has echoed through the decades and currently shows no signs of easing up”(Stone 1). “Despite many claims to the contrary, life does not begin at conception: It is an unbroken chain that stretches back nearly to the origin of the Earth, 4.6 billion years ago” (Sagan 3). Every unborn baby should be treated as a complete, individual, living human being from the earliest moment of his or her existence at fertilization. When analyzing when the beginning of life starts, education must come first. We need to educate our young people at an early age. The importance of educating people on life and when it all starts is a huge task considering the controversies involved. The schools have programs in place to educate both the female and male population about pregnancy and sex. Teaching our young children and adults about the consequences of becoming pregnant and the issue of when a life really starts can make a big difference in the World. When one becomes pregnant, questioning when life begins becomes an issue especially if abortion is on their mind. Students suffer from ignorance. Comprehensive, medically accurate sexuality education is becoming the exception rather than the rule; as a result, more students lack basic information. The vast majority of American parents support comprehensive medically accurate sexuality education. A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, found that most parents want their children to receive a variety of information on subjects including contraception and condom use, sexually transmitted infections, sexual orientation, safer sex practices, abortion, communication and coping skills with the emotional aspects of sexual relationships. “One to five percent of parents remove their children from sexuality education courses”(Sagan 5). House bill 193, which declares that human life begins at fertilization but does not change any statute regarding abortion, was heard in January of 2003 by the House Judiciary Committee. The purpose of the bill recognizes the unborn as having an equal constitutional right to life upon fertilization and to perhaps change hearts and minds on the issue of abortion. In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court declared that it does not know the exact point that human life begins (Roe vs. Wade), but since then medical studies have found that life does begin at fertilization. “The difficult question of when human life begins has been answered. It is now known through genetic research that life begins at fertilization. No matter how many philosophical or political definitions we want to create around the matter in the laboratory, we know that that point of life is at fertilization.
