Female Stereotypes in the Media

A major female stereotype is the necessity of beauty. The physical body has a much stronger impact on a person than anything else in their lives. While the mind is very complex and important, since no one can physically see it no one really pays heed to it. The need to be beautiful and the actions people take to do so have really begun to get out of hand. This is clearly shown in the short story "The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In this story a young woman marries a self proclaimed genius. She has been seen as beautiful by all that have crossed her path, everyone that is except her husband. He is a perfectionist, and all that is not perfect he feels that he can make so. His wife had a small red, crescent-moon shaped beauty mark on one of her cheeks. She had always felt that that was what made her special and many found it to had to her appearance, but her husband found it absolutely hideous...
