In Fredrick Douglass's narrative about his life as a slave, he brings up the point that as a slave its better to be one that is unknowledgeable about life. Douglass points out that slaves who weren't taught were better off because he they didn't know what life could be like without slavery. Douglass knows what its like to be treated kindly most slaves know nothing of the sort. Having learned that there is a better life out there made him hate his existence. Slaves who were ignorant didn't comprehend how wretched their condition really was. My personal opinion is that knowing was better then not knowing. If slaves had gotten together and taught each other then they would be able to get together and up rise against what was happening to them. Of course that's why they made it a law not to teach slaves, for that reason.
