Imagine that you are a victim of a bad accident. Due to this accident, your leg
has to be amputated. Now, months after your amputation, you still have feeling in the
leg that isn't even there anymore. Feelings like this are called phantom limb pains,
and these pains are an illness that isn't fully understood (Sherman, 2003).
What Is Phantom Limb Pain?
Phantom limb pain is a strange illness, because it is located in a body part that
no longer exists due to amputation or extraction (Ray). Phantom limb pain occurs
among 50-80% of amputees, and usually can happen any time. Sometimes the pain
happens right after amputation, but in other cases, it doesn't happen until years later
(Sherman). Many amputees are affected by phantom limb pain for months. Also,
