In 2001 the gaming industry brought in approximately $11 billion dollars of revenue, $3.3 million of which came from online gaming. It is projected that the online gaming industry will bring in 4.5 million dollars annually by 2005. The gaming industry as a whole is projected to bring in $18 billion dollars.
One of the main reasons for this forecast is the projected proliferation of broadband technology. As of a survey taken in 2001, only 9% of households in the United States had broadband in them. The number of homes with broadband technology has increased since then and is projected to be in 41% of all online households by 2005. Most of the current Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game's (MMRPG's) require at least a modem speed for 56 kbps (or kilobits per seconds) or higher to run online.
