Necessary Harm Can you imagine the stress of trying to perform a duty while seeing men, friends of yours, dying all around you? Well this is the everyday bourdon a soldier in combat is forced to bare. However, many men in battle make these unbearable tasks seem bearable by taking their minds off of the real task at hand and dreaming. Although these dreams can be just as vital to a soldier as his weapon, they can have destructive side effects as well. This is never more evident than in Tim O’Brien’s short story, The Things They Carried. For some of the soldiers, the dreams they carried were the only thing that made it possible for them to carry out their everyday duties. For instance, “ Lieutenant Cross gazed at the tunnel. But he was not there. He was buried with Martha under the white sand at the Jersey shore.” In this quote, Lieutenant Cross chose to let his mind wander to a beach with the girl he loves instead of thinking about the dangers that could ly in the fox hole in front of him.
