The Future of Linux
Jim Enright, director of Oracle's Linux Program Office describes how open source OS helps Oracle customers and the company itself.
Oracle is "aggressively" transferring it's internal IT to Linux.
In the Future, Enright sees all of Oracle internal IT working on the Linux platform.
All Oracle employees use Linux at some point in their workday.
Linux reduces the cost of system management and support. Customers used to deploy different Oracle DBMSes on different boxes. Linux enables them to deploy, manage and upgrade an Oracle program on multiple systems running the same version on the Oracle database and the OS.
Oracle recommends users to stick to a short list of enterprise Linux distribution; either Red Hat or United Linux(primarily SuSE) which avoids the "Heathkit TV" approach of assembling an enterprise-grade Linux from disparate parts. With those distributions, Oracle can offer an "Unbreakable Linux" support plan. So, Oracle customers with operating system problems can approach them for a solution, not the distribution developer...
