In the book, A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid expresses many different feelings about her home town of Antigua. In this book, Kincaid presents the feeling that Antigua is a small helpless island taken over by the British. Also, through several different examples, such as the downfall of the island's library, symbolism of the destruction of Antigua is presented. In this book, Jamaica Kincaid talks about imperialism and the destruction of her country.
Before Imperialism overtook the small town of Antigua, the island proved to be a secure place. The Antiguans supported themselves and didn't need anyone's help. But after the British came into the country and changed everything, the Antiguans may have been telling a different story. The whole morale of the island dropped and the amount of money dwindled. Foreigners overtook the island using it to make money and benefiting themselves. Kincaid bitterly describes the ambush of the outsiders as they use the Antiguans for their money...
