Sport is a complicated thing to define. We all have ideas and assumptions on what is classed as sport and what is not classed as sport. We would safely bet that football can be classed as a sport, but would we make the same bet on darts, snooker or tiddlywinks? In this assignment, I shall try and formulate my own definition of sport with use of literary references and sources. My theory of sport shall be based on those that have already been discussed by other theorists and sports orientated authors.
There are many different ways to describe what sport is. For example, Honeybourne, J (1996) states that sport is: “Institutionalised contests, using physical exertion between human beings or teams of human beings.” There are numerous arguments against each statement that tries to define sport. The argument here is that for something like horse racing: the jockeys are in competition, but they are not using physical exertion, but it is still classed as a sport. ...
Likewise, the International Council for Sport and Physical Education (1964) suggests that: “Any physical activity which has the character of play and which takes the form of struggle with oneself or involves competition with others is a sport. ... Is that therefore not a sport? Because it is, it’s an Olympic sport. But is it physical enough to be classed as a sport?
