Pick Up On South Street
Through the eyes of the gangsters in this movie we are shown that the city is a web of despair in which scavengers and predators survive by living off one another. Anti-hero pickpocket Skip McCoy's characteristics are brutal, charming and self concerned. Skip survives in this overcrowded, competitive and corrupt city-world where most of the time even friends will sell you out for fifty dollars. Utilizing his basic human characteristics, Skip manages to get by.
Skip McCoy can be brutal, when necessary, in order to achieve what he's after. For example, when he comes home to find Candy in his water front shack. She was rummaging around in search of the wallet he had lifted from her earlier that day; so he belts her right in the kisser and knocks her unconscious. He follows up this act of brutality by popping open a beer, and indulging. He then proceeds to smile, which obviously shows no remorse for what he did. Skip then goes through her purse looking for anything of interest that he can take...
