Money, fame, glitz and glamour, doesn’t all that sound good? Who would not want that? You can achieve all these things if you get into the music recording industry. But you cannot just walk into a record label and say “Hello I want to be rich and famous and sell millions of records”. They will probably call security to escort you out of the building. First you need to know how record labels work, and how record contracts work. Here is that very process, the process of the recording industry. In order to have a shot of some sort of success in the recording industry, you need to know hoe record labels work. Here is a general idea of how record labels function. Keep in mind these days many record labels are owned by huge corporations. First there is the president of the record company, the Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O), he is in charge of business of the whole company. Next there is the Vice President, his job is to watch over the various departments in a record company and also to make sure each department is doing their jobs. The Vice president reports the progress of each department to the C.E.O. I am sure your wondering what each department is? Well do not worry the wait is over. The first department and probably the most important is the Artist and Repertoire department (A&R). The A&R department’s Job is to find new musical talent they work hands on with the artist they sign. “The single most Glamorous department of a record label” most would say. The A&R are assigned various tasks such as assisting with the song selection for the artist album, choosing which producers will work on the artist album, and finally when and where the album will be recorded.
