My Picture Essay
My Picture written by Abraham Cowley was an interesting way to write about a loved one. The narrator wrote it directly to his loved one, who possesses a picture of him. The purpose is to bring out to the audience that time does go on and when time passes people change. The tone of this poem is ironic grimness, where it's written in an almost sad tone.
The picture is a good way to show how time passes bye just like people do. It gives the reader a mental picture of what one looks like and the changes one makes over the years. One can see a change and can see that one does fade away. In the lines "my rival-image will be then thought blest, and laugh at me as dispossessed;" shows that his, the narrators, old self was better and his self now is dispossessed. The picture is symbolizing something only a picture has, no soul, no feelings, no laughter, only a picture...
