The Cask of Amontillado

“The Vengeance of a Madman” “The Cask of Amontillado” is the story of two men, Montresor and his “friend,” Fortunato. The story which was written by Edgar Alan Poe was first published in the year 1846. It focuses on a friendship gone wrong. The story takes place in Italy during the time of the year called “carnival”. “Carnival” would be very similar to the Mardi Gras event which id held in New Orleans. Montresor ends up killing Fortunato. Montresor is a cruel, insane, and evil person. Montresor is cruel for the way he punishes his friend. Montresor acts as though he cares for Fortunato. While in the cavern, Montresor asks Fortunato numerous times if he would like to turn back and go home. Fortunato says no because he has decided that he wants to test the Amontillado. While traveling through the caverns, Montresor brings up the fact that the area is full of nitre which is causing Fortunato to cough.
