Perception is the term used to describe the way we process raw sensory from the environment into what we see.
Some psychologists would argue that what we see is purely formed of the sensory information from our receptors, this is known as the direct theory of perception.
Constructivist theories differ in that constructivists believe we rely on other sources of information to build our perception of the outside world e.g. Gregory.
"Perception is not determined by the stimulus
patterns; rather is a dynamic searching for the best possible
interpretation of the available data"
This means that perception is a combination of sensory information and a logical, unconscious mental reasoning.
These concepts relate directly to the concept of set which states that perception in active process or a readiness to perceive particular features of a stimulus or maybe ignore others. There are several factors which can induce or effect set, the two types are perceiver variables and stimulus variables.
