Legalization of marijuana!! Throughout recent U.S. history, the subject of marijuana legalization has been controversial and somewhat distorted through the eyes of the media and news coverage. Politicians "compete for votes on the basis of whose rhetoric is 'tougher' on drugs (Reinarman, 106)" and the public has bought it, been afraid, and elected the officials who could most easily "save them." Recently, however, the boat has been rocked. One of the prime stories covered by the media today is the recent push for the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes. Our neighbor to the north, Canada, is on its way to increasing both the amount of marijuana one can have for personal use and for medical use (Lunman, par. 1)..
