“Cancer is a disease in which cells multiply wildly, destroy healthy tissue, and endanger life”(worldbook internet). ... “Cancer can occur in almost any part of the body and it affects people at all ages, races, occupations and economic levels. There’s much about the beginning of cancer but there’s not a real answer to how it starts “(Cancer 1). ... Blood cancers don’t involve a tumor”(Cancer 2). ... “Four in 10 Americans will experience cancer at some point, and of the million or so people diagnosed each year, 80% will be 55 or older “( ). ... The exact cause of the development of cancer in the body cells has not been found yet, but scientists are trying to understand the behavior, because “to understand the way cancer cells interact with their environment helps doctors decide a treatment, then they may be able to design therapies to interrupt this process “(Christensen 351).
Cancer cells start growing in a specific part of the body, and then they begin to multiply and spread to some other points. “Cancer cells that have traveled to new locations in the body and grown there cause most cancer pain and cancer related deaths… Researchers today are still trying to understand why cancer cells disperse throughout the body”(Christensen 350). Because of the unpredictable spread of cancer, doctors can’t know when a cancer is growing fast or not, or if cancer is stopped after treating it or if it will continue growing.
So “the first step when cancer is detected is to determine the stage of the cancer. The doctor will need to know the location, size, and kind“(Cancer 10).
