INTRODUCTION The purpose of this comparison is to recommend which laptop the Digital Production Department should purchase. The department has long searched for a way to replace its outdated and inefficient line of laptops. This report is designed to help the department in that search. Those selected are Apple computers that boast the new G4 technology. G4 technology lends itself to portable computers because of the added internal processor cache, graphics acceleration, and lower power usage. Of the many perspective computers, only two models have been selected for this comparison. They are, the Titanium PowerBook 15-inch and the 17-inch Titanium PowerBook. This report will compare these laptops based on the following criteria: 1. Features 2. Performance 3. Price RECOMMENDATION Based on the criteria, I recommend the 15-inch Apple Titanium PowerBook G4. It performed well in all of the tests and had good standard features for the price. In addition, it was priced lower than the 17-inch model. SCOPE The first criterion is features. The industry of computers is an ever-growing and continually more competitive market. Many computer manufactures are emerging with well-made, reliable systems that make a valid argument for themselves. Digital Production Department Page 2 October 26, 2003 Many different features are available on today's computer, but only the standard, essential features will be discussed here. The second criterion is performance. The PowerBook G4 gets a tremendous performance boost from an advanced cache memory architecture — including 512K on-chip level 2 cache on all models — that provides ultra fast dedicated memory with massively enhanced throughput. The PowerBooks ships with a generous supply of memory and there is room for even more. The third factor is price. The goal of the department is to find a system that would stay within the budget. The computers were priced by the manufacturers suggested price, but the prices grow considerably when adding options.
