There are many recurring themes in Othello. The one that really interested me was "I am not what I am." In Act I, scene i, Iago, an ancient is talking with Roderigo, a nobleman about their hatred toward Othello. Roderigo's reasoning is that Othello has the woman the he loves and Iago's reasons are more substantial. Iago is angry that he was passed over for the position of lieutenant, which Othello appointed his friend Cassio who has less military qualifications. Iago must hate Othello, yet he must make believe to Othello that he loves him and is truly loyal. Iago states on page 243, line 67 "I am not what I am." He is talking to Roderigo about the revenge he will inflict upon Othello. This is a very important theme because it is seen all throughout Othello. Iago's manipulative and destructive nature allows him to create the demise of many of the main characters...
