The Scarlet Letter Analysis
This story, with its adultery, conspiracy, and betrayal would make an excellent coming attraction on the Hollywood scene and probably a pretty good book. It draws Puritan ideals and writing styles despite its long, drawn out work. It greatly emphasizes the hidden guilt that causes more suffering than open guilt. The three main characters, Hester Pyrnne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth demonstrate the hidden guilt along with the symbolism throughout the story. Their personalities are shown most clearly during the scaffold scenes. The scenes illustrate the immediate, delayed and prolonged effects that the sin of adultery has on the main character.
In the first scene, everyone in town is gathered in the marketplace because Hester is being questioned about the identity of the father of the child, Pearl. She experiences open guilt through being widely punished for adultery. She was forced to stand in public to be ridiculed and hated by the community.
