War is the gruesome collision of opposing interests where inhumanity surmounts, deteriorating the human spirit. The purpose of All Quiet on the Western Front is to illustrate the vivid horror and raw nature of war. However, in the midst of such brutality some beauty subsists. Like the middle of autumn . . . . the leaves and flowers of the trees are slowly decaying and begin to fall; but there are a few blossoms that have not yet perished. Those blossoms seem even more beautiful since all their surroundings are damaged. Like the blossoms there are moments in the novel that display this scarce, yet outstanding beauty: when the soldiers gather to play cards on their boxes, admiring the scenery; when the men capture and cook the goose; and when Paul demonstrated humanity to the Russians...
