Shadow Boxing is a spectator sport. The play The Shadow Box is written and presented in representational style. “With the representational style, the “lie” exists in the auditorium because it suggests that the audience is not really in a theater, but that it is eavesdropping upon actual life through an invisible “fourth wall” into a private room. The title of the play, the setting, the lighting, the Interviewer, and some dialog are used to keep the audience at a distance. We are unnoticed, uninvited observers. The title, The Shadow Box is a very appropriate one for this play as the definition of a shadow box is an enclosed case usually with a glass front in which something is set for protection and display. This definition neatly describes the condition of each of the three patients. They are housed in their individual cottages protected behind an invisible fourth wall.
