Informal Essay 2
For the assignment we went to the music library to check out music and there were no copies left of the music on the list, but I did manage to get a cd of African music from Zimbabwe. The cd was called Zimbabwe: the Soul of Mbira. It consists of nine traditional songs of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. It was recorded in Zimbabwe and was first released in 1973.
I have heard some traditional African music before and have a general idea about the sound of it. This music was still a little different from other examples that I had heard before. The Main difference was that the music on this cd did not rely heavily on drums for the beat, like much of Africa's traditional music. The beat in most of the songs on the cd used percussion type instruments that sound similar to maracas called hoshos to keep the beat. Many of the songs had instruments that sounded like Xylophones to provide much of the melody. These instruments are traditional of the people of Zimbabwe and are called Mbiras...
