Commentary
1. Events at Wuthering Heights are striking during this chapter particularly because of the behaviour of Hindley, Nelly and Catherine.
Hindley is grief stricken because of the death of his wife Frances. As a result he has turned to alcohol. Frances was a huge part of Hindley's life; she was almost like the half of him that kept him sane and without her he is being driven mad.
"his madman's rage."
Hindley is thrusting himself into a state of dissipation; by this I mean he is being very destructive to his life by drinking and gambling recklessly.
One very obvious point that shows that he is at the edge of sanity is when he threatens to kill Nelly with a carving knife:
"I shall make you swallow the carving knife, Nelly!"
To further this thought, he also makes references to his plans to kill Heathcliff
"I wouldn't murder you tonight."
Even though he isn't planning to murder him at that moment, it is still very disturbing to outright confess aspirations to murder someone...
