During world war two the needs of soldiers came before the needs of anyone else. The result of that was many items were in short supply, new government agency "OPA" (Office of Price Administration), Set prices, and rationed products. The rationed products prices and points (coupons) changed each month based on supply and demand.
Shops were told to fix their prices in line with government guidelines so nobody went hungry. This was a lesson learned from the First World War when many shops made their prices so high that only the rich could afford them. As a lot of British men were in the forces this meant that women had to go out to work, as well as doing the shopping, cooking and cleaning! This in turn affected the household income and was the beginning of hard times for most families...
But if the food was carefully shared and inspiringly cooked, it wasn't that bad! A lot of families grew their own vegetables...
