Sports violence can be defined as behavior which causes harm, occurs outside of the rules of the sport, and is unrelated to the competitive objectives of the sport (Abdal-Haqq , Ismat). Throughout the years violence has occurred in almost every sport. Whenever there is physical competition there is always the chance of a violent act being committed. Violence in sports has escalated considerably from the past to the present. Sport violence has increased in both frequency and seriousness. Violence is most prevalent in team contact sports, such as ice hockey and football. Although most occurrences of violence originate from players, others, including coaches, parents, fans, and the media, also contribute to what has been described as an outbreak of violence in sports today.
