Throughout Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find," it is apparent that the grandmother is a very selfish woman who only wants best for herself. Her motives for doing anything are only beneficial to herself, and she is oblivious to any consequences her actions might have. Even when the family is discovered by the Misfit, and killed one by one, she still holds on to the reality that, for some reason, he will save her. The Misfit on the other hand may not only have blood in him as he shows some good traits. But known the less he is a cold hearted killer. The only time we see the grandmother reach outside of her selfishness is in the end, when she is faced with death and comes to the realization that she is not above everyone else, and her life will not be spared.
The grandmother exhibits her superiority over others through the way she presents herself and the way she thinks. Many times in the story she knows that her son will dislike whatever she is planning on doing, but she does it anyhow. For example, she says, "Her son, Bailey, didn't like to arrive at a motel with a cat." However, she brings her cat anyway, and hides it in a picnic basket...
