Irony of Inferno
Dante's Inferno deals with sin and the consequences of sin. However, much of the discussion throughout Inferno deals with Dante and his questioning if the punished actually deserve to be in Hell. Another questionable scenario is that of the dead in Hell wanting to be remembered. These two examples show the conflict of moral actions throughout the epic.
In Canto VI, the dead want to be remembered. This suggests that the dead do not feel that they are being punished for sin. This also shows that the dead are innocent. If these people are in Hell, they are obviously there for a reason, however, this contradicts that rationale.
Again the reader is shown a contradiction when Dante rips a part of the tree. Virgil apologizes, however Dante does not seem to be remorseful...
