In Being There by Jerzy Kosinski the main character named Chance survived only by Chance. Chance worked for a kind old man in a garden for his entire life whose untimely death put him on the streets. Chance has never experienced the outside world first hand. He did not have an education and never learned how to read or write. The only connections Chance had were through television. This gave him a very literal personality and a simple mind. This exposure to television gave Chance a very narrow view of the world and he lacked depth and ability to really understand what was going on around him.
Television took over his life and he began to believe the real world was one big stage. Chance was intrigued by a department store video camera when he was projected onto the television and now thought that he had been on TV. As Chance walked away from the storefront in dismay a limousine bumped into his leg...
