Embarrassment, ridicule, humiliation, and ignominy are a few words that describe the United State's political reputation since the California recall. We Americans have brought this upon our country, by allowing these candidates to run for such a prestigious position. The ranks of 135 candidates include professional politicians, a radiologist, a nuclear engineer, an adult education teacher, a porn star, and a 100-year-old woman from Long Beach. It was not the recall process itself that lost credibility, but the way in which the process was carried out. The transfer of power between the governors must be smooth, and the results of the election should not be questioned if California hopes to maintain any political credibility. This cannot happen again! America cannot afford any further embarrassment. I believe that each candidate running for any position above a precinct delegate should undergo a more thorough background check.
I understand that this will possibly stir up a huge uproar among the political community, seeing how this will change the requirements of citizens running for office. The current requirements for governmental office in California are: all candidates are required to first obtain 65-to-100 signatures of registered California voters on their nomination papers and must pay $3,500 nomination fee...
