Occupations in Five Points
During the time of "Five Points", people came from all over different countries for different reasons. "Five Points" was "the most notorious neighborhood in the nineteenth-century"(p.1) The Irish, Italian, Chinese immigrants as well as Germans, African Americans, and Jews came over to America to start fresh on new opportunities. These people came from different social classes and had different views of coming to the States. When these immigrants came to America, they all had to get jobs of some sort and had to start fresh from everything except for the money that they brought with them which in most cases wasn't much. Occupations that these immigrants filled sometimes depended on where you were from and what they did before they left. Sometimes people had a hard time finding jobs and had to take what job was giving to them.
One of the main reasons for these immigrants to flee to "Five Points" was for the jobs. The jobs that these immigrants held while in the states did not pay well but was a lot more than what they were getting paid before they came to America. Some of these immigrants left their home in Europe with successful jobs and decided to sell everything and got to America...
