In the novel My Antonia, Antonia is a strong and beautiful woman, though it does not show with her outside appearance. Antonia was very successful in schieving her goals and she, throughout her life, perservered her way through certain situations with her amazing upbeat and witty personality. Antonia always had the same morals and goals throughout her life but strives to achieve them in different ways. Antonia mostly sticks out with her determination to be strong and successful when she was a child, a hired girl, and as a mother.
As a child, Antonia was the only one in her family who knew how to speak English and was the only one who really appreaciated her life to the fullest. Jim Burden was always there by her side to help her along the way by sitting with her in the prairie fields teachingher English, and he was there to help her through the tough time of her father committing suicide. Antonia was very close with her father and really looked up to him and knew he was not happy here in America. She hated her mother for making the family move, and start the beginning of the separation of her family. Though Antonia's father died, her big brown eyes still shined as a person who was just happy to be alive and living life. Antonia's childhood was similar to most poor pioneer people's except for the fact that she had it a little bit harder with her family coming from another country, getting taken advantage of, having no money, and not being able to relate closely with many other people...
