Hitch-hiking is a great way to travel. When I was an Estonian student, I traveled this way around Europe a lot. Often people told me that hitch-hiking is a very dangerous thing, and, according to my own experience, I can say that the first trip I took was the scariest one because unfortunately hitch-hiking gets a lot of bad press and it seems that you1l get murded if you hitch around Europe. In real life you have a greater chance of being attacked walking the street of a big city in North America than hitching in Europe. That's why although many students in Estonia think that hitch-hiking is a dying art and they prefer to travel by public transport, me and my friends prefer hitch-hiking for discovering places, meeting new people and saving money.
One of the best things about hitch-hiking is discovering places. This kind of traveling allows you to really get to know the locals. You can get dropped off anywhere, allowing you to discover really beautiful landscapes you may never have dreamt of visiting. You also find you could be spending some time on the side of the road awaiting a ride, which gives you the time to take in the scenery around you, its sights, its sounds, its smell, leaving a far greater imprint on your consciousness than a bus or train hurtling through the terrain. Also when you are not in a bus or train you can take a stop wherever you want or change the direction of your traveling...
