Major Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology Theoretical perspectives in sociology include symbolic interaction, functional analysis, and conflict theory. Each perspective relates to the way that society functions. For instance; with out symbolic interaction society wouldn’t exist. There would be no order or rhythm, possibly similar to the way early man acted. Functional analysis is important because equilibrium should be maintained throughout society. The conflict theory though lacking positive effects is evident in society, and coincides with the survival of the fittest theory by Spencer. An example of symbolic interaction today would be to look at the way a deaf community interacts. Sign language is a way of speaking by using only hand signals, and is sometimes the only way a deaf person can communicate. Sign language begins with an alphabet, which is then transformed into words.
