Dick Driver is a very promising young psychiatrist with the world at his fingertips. He could have done anything with his life, yet he chose the one thing that led to its demise, and he did so willingly. He ignored the warning signs and let his cockiness and lack of self-control determine his decisions in life. Dick Driver allows his self-indulgence to make the decisions, which leads to his marriage to Nicole, ruining his career.
Dick is the most promising character in "Tender is the Night." In his early years Doctor Richard Driver was an Rhodes Scholar, and a very promising psychiatrist in Germany attending medical school, learning and studying with the best doctors of his time. He had a degree from Johns Hopkins University. At the young age of 26 he had the world saying, "show us something." By the time World War I came around he was already "too valuable, too much of a capital investment to be shot off in a gun (115)." A friend even referred to him as "Lucky Dick," a nickname that stuck in his head...
