Have you ever thought about how advertisements affect our culture and society? Jean Kilbourne's essay "Beautyand the Beast of Advertising" would be a good piece to use for your freshmen seminar that is based on advertisements effect on society and culture. This essay would be helpful to your class because its statistics show how the advertisements effect our culture, it could create interesting discussions among your students and it is an interesting piece to read for the age of students that your are teaching. I feel that this piece is good because of the effect that it will have on your students after they read it because of the startling facts.
In the essay "Beautyand the Beast of Advertising" by Jean Kilbourne we learn that in today's American culture advertising influences everything and everyone. Kilbourne informs us that advertisements "sell values, images, and concepts of success and worth, love and sexuality, popularity, normality and sometimes-even addictions" (Kilbourne 194). Advertisements tells us who we are and who we should be. Kilbourne now informs us that advertisements main target is adolescents because they are just now forming their values and identities. Advertising creates an idea that no one is ugly, overweight, poor, struggling or disabled. Kilbourne tells us that, "Women are shown almost exclusively as housewives or sex objects" (Kilbourne 195)...
