Most historians agree that one of the defining characteristics of a civilization is the arts. Music, architecture, literature, and visual art define what a civilization is. To determine a civilization's level of hostility, religious beliefs, or even culture, an archaeologist would only need to view the art. Viewing the art can also determine how culturally advanced the civilization was. Taking a look at modern American culture, one may notice that art is all around us. It is in our city skylines, our music on the radio, commercials on television, billboards along the road, and in theaters. The arts also define ultimately what the culture is and how they perceive the world around them. Throughout history, the arts have played many pivotal roles in the cultures of civilizations around the world.
