Martin Luther has just published another work, Christian Liberty, in which he makes the seemingly contradictory claim that “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none,” and “A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” In what follows I will summarize and explain for Your Holiness exactly what Luther means by this. In addition, I have felt it necessary to point out those parts of Luther’s treatise that seem to me dangerous to the Roman Church, and I have concluded this report with a description of them.
Luther’s theory of every Christian as a free lord is based on the belief that every Christian who has faith already has all the tools necessary to achieve salvation, and thus is not bound by laws or works. ... A Christian who has faith in the Lord and His Son does not need to perform works to justify himself, works will neither help him to glorify God, nor acknowledge God’s truthfulness. ...
Although a Christian may not be bound by laws or works, he still acts as the dutiful servant of all, but not for the purpose of achieving salvation.
