Gambling - wagering of money or other item of value on an uncertain event that is dependent either wholly on chance, as in roulette, or partly on chance and partly on skill, as in certain card games and in sporting contests.
History
The history of gambling in Canada is linked to the Canadian Criminal Code, which in 1892 declared a complete ban on most gambling activities with the exception of horse racing. Gambling on horse races was the most common type of gambling at the end of the 19th century. Since the time of the confederation, the ban on gambling has gradually been lifted. Between the years 1892 and 1969 Canadians would have several exemptions to the law. It started off with being allowed to bet on horse races, then permitted small scale gambling on behalf of charities. These charitable events eventually led to a Criminal Code amendment in 1969 that gave the federal government the opportunity to profit off of gambling for worthwhile events such as the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The 1969 amendment also authorized provincial governments to have and conduct their own lotteries. All of the governments began to bring in large amounts of profit during the 1970's...
