Evolution through "Confessions"
In his "Confessions" Rousseau tells the story of his life, from the first profound influence experience of his simple childhood in Geneva. Rousseau explains in detail how the society that he lived in had a dramatic impact on his life. He writes about relationships between a demanding society and his individuality. His autobiography demonstrates a mixture of moods which includes defiance, vulnerability, self investigation, denial, passion, confusion and detachment. He believed that he was not like any other man in existence: "I am not made like any of those I have seen; I venture to believe that I am not made like any of those in existence. If I am not better, at least I am different" (Wilkie, 433). When he was five or six he began to read romances that his mother had left behind. This was how Rousseau learned to be gentle, through his mother. Rousseau's evolution through his "Confessions" shows how one man can come to understand the different aspects of growing up from a child to a mature adult. The evolution that he is going through is that of a good evolution and one that is respected in society...
