The advent of technology has dawned upon us. We owe to modern innovations everything we experienced today. In fact, we have our computers, laptops, Personal Digital Assistant or PDA's, and of course, the 'indispensable', our very own cellphone. Cellular telephones or "cellphones" have become a necessity in the everyday life of Filipinos because it provides a more economic form of communication, it allows more mobility and it creates a modern life style for us.
The Philippines is dubbed as "the text capital of the world". It is only here in the Philippines where we have the cheapest charge rates in mobile telecommunications. A message sent costs Php 1 and a call about Php 4 during off-peak to Php 8 per minute, during peak hours. Whereas in other countries, the rate could go as high as five times the cost of ours. Anthony Ian Cruz, a spokesman for TXTPower (a consumer advocacy group) said that our total text messages received and sent combined go beyond 150 million to 200 million per day one of the largest volumes in the world. In addition, Jorge Sarmiento, National Telecommunications Commission Deputy Commissioner, said that mobile phone subscribers in the Philippines are expected to grow to 20 million by the year 2003 end, up from 18 million currently...
