Sexually Transmitted Diseases
A big problem among people throughout the United States is sexually transmitted diseases. This year, fifteen million people will be infected with an STD of some sort. Of those fifteen million, almost two-thirds will be under the age of twenty-five. "Roughly 70 million people are infected with a sexually transmitted disease, amounting to one in four people, the highest rate the United States has on record"(Foster). This essay will be focused on the three most commonly known STD's spread throughout the United States: Syphilis; Gonorrhea; and Herpes.
"Syphilis is caused by a bacterium, Treponema pallidum, a spirochete 10-13 micrometers in length and 0.15 micrometers in width"(Tseng 77). It is spread through direct contact with a syphilis sore.
