Janielle Murray (Essay #6) Compare the mothers in “Two Kinds” and “I Stand Here Ironing,” for parenting styles, concerns and their ambitions for their daughters. Try to evaluate the effect you think they would have on their own children Both Two Kinds and I Stand Here Ironing show two different types of mothers. Nikan’s mother only wanted her child to do her best, and did many things to push her child for excellence. While Emily’s mother was dwelling on her own issues and not reaching out to her child the way she could have. Or maybe Emily’s mother was just a product of the environment wasn’t optimistic enough to see past their status by letting her child know that things can get better. Nikan’s mother felt that her child could be a prodigy and first tried with Shirley Temple. The mother would use old movies as training films, by having Nikan imitate Shirley Temple. Things went as far as a haircut that went wrong; instead she had to settle for the Peter Pan look. To have that gracefulness and stage presence of Shirley Temple the mother even had Nikan attend a beauty training school. Emily was not able to accept her looks and wanting to resemble Shirley Temple. Her mother never took the time to let her know that she was a pretty girl even though she didn’t have blue eyes and blond hair. Emily’s mother should have been more assuring by letting her know that she is still beautiful without blond hair and not to see herself as a tall dark and foreign looking person.
