The reason I use a heavy rod is for 2 reasons. One, I'm using a much heavier weight than I do when using something like a Texas rig, and a heavy action rod gives me better control on the cast. When throwing weights of around 1oz. with a 3 foot or so leader the heavy action works better for me. The second reason and probably the most important is the hookset. Since you are familiar with a C-rig you know that a sweeping of the rod tip is the best way to get a hookset. I use the longer rod-7' to move a lot of line and not only am I moving line I'm moving a heavy weight, and a rod with a lot of backbone makes that easier to get a good hookset. One thing I also do is rather than using the traditional lead egg sinker and glass bead I use two tungsten weights, usually a 3/4 oz and a smaller one in place of the glass bead. The reason is the tungsten weights really make a loud click when they hit together, louder than lead and glass and since sound carries real well in water attracts fish from farther away. That, and the fact I found a bunch of the tungsten weights on clearance at WalMart a while back and loaded up on them A flipping switch is a setting on the reel that allows the reel to engage when you let up on the freespool button...
