Road to Nirvana
"Enlightenment seems to strike at the same time that all seeking activity stops." (Enlightenment Now) Dave Oshana, a spiritual teacher, believes that he did not find enlightenment until he gave up his searching. "I had tried to find enlightenment for 30 yearsNothing seemed to work, not even remotelyI do not know how or why I became enlightened, especially as I had stopped believing in its existence." (Enlightenment Now) Gautama Buddha came up with the four noble truths as a way to lead oneself to enlightenment and nirvana. A major theme in his system is the extinction of desire and craving. (Buddhism) Nirvana is the extinction of desire, and in turn the end of suffering. When one is on a journey seeking enlightenment, they may find themselves searching for knowledge and wisdom to achieve this goal; following those who have seemed to have already achieved the same goal, and looking to learn the lesson that may give them freedom. But man can become consumed in this process. With his focus solely on his goal, he inevitably enters a perpetual cycle of desire and disappointment. If one is actively seeking nirvana, they have desire within them...
