Young-Helmholtz trichromatic---theory states that the retina has three types of color receptors, each especially sensitive to one of three colors. The colors are red, blue or green. When we stimulate combinations of these cones, we see other colors. For example, there are no receptors sensitive to yellow, yet when both red and green sensitive cones are stimulated, we see yellow. Do not think about this process as mixing paints. Mixing paints is a subtractive color mixing because it subtracts wavelengths from the reflective light. The more colors you mix in, the fewer wavelengths can be reflected back.
