To whomever it may concern,
I am writing to you about the atrocious things that are happening to the rainforest. Loggers, miners and other economic developers are destroying the rainforest and developing it. But they're not just taking a little bit of the rainforest.
The rate at which Brazil's rainforests are disappearing has leapt by 40% in a single year, following only minor decreases in the amount of development. A year ago, an area the size of Belgium was lost to pointless development. Deforestation is a serious issue, and the amount of it that happens must dramatically decrease, or soon there will be no rainforest left. If we had no rainforest, it would mean losing untold amounts of plants, which would mean losing potential cures for fatal diseases, such as cancer. We would also make many species of animals extinct, including monkeys, butterflies, and birds. As well as this, the trees in the rainforest produce 50% of the oxygen in the world, so pointlessly tearing this vital area down would be tragic. Logging old-growth forest, mature forest, rainforest and threatened species habitat is not sustainable...
