War: A Necessary Evil
“I just wanted you to know that I love you. ... That is why our response to the events of September 11 is so important, and why it is necessary to take military actions against known terrorist organizations and the countries that support them in order to protect our safety, ideals and all that makes America the beautiful country it is. ... Our war on terror begins with al-Qaeda, but it does not end there. ... It is important to recognize that though other factors are necessary in combating terrorism, military action and war must be the dominant means of achieving this objective. ... It seems likely that had we been fortunate enough to prevent the hijackings, we would never have gone to war against the Taliban and Al Queda in Afghanistan. ... Our weakness in the war against terrorism is the overall complacency that we are displaying in the face of complete evil. We have shown patience and military restraint when necessary, yet it is imperative that we avoid becoming a culture of tentativeness, wishful thinking, and a willingness to compromise our core values to avoid clashes. To win the war against terrorism, we need to summon a greater willingness to confront.
The downsides to taking military action or going to war are tragic and unfortunately include the loss of human life. War is violent, ugly and evil. ... The world we live in however is also full of violence and evil.
If the world were perfect, there would only be peace; there would be no such thing as terrorism thus no such thing or need for war.
